We recently completed a stunning custom wardrobe project for a client of Yvonne Mace at Living Space Interior Design. Yvonne approached us with a clear brief: to design and build a set of wardrobes that would harmoniously blend solid natural materials with rich, painted detail. This particular project utilised a modern rustic aesthetic to complement the client’s home, which featured exposed timber beams and other organic elements.
We selected solid oak for the wardrobe tops, finished with a live edge to match the natural character of the existing architecture. To create a striking contrast, we used Farrow & Ball’s Vardo No. 288 for the painted elements, which is a vibrant, deeply pigmented teal-blue that pairs beautifully with the warmth of oak. The main structure of the wardrobes was built using crown-cut oak veneer, ensuring consistency in grain and tone throughout the design.
One of the most distinctive features of this project is the custom-designed staircase integrated into the wardrobe layout. The client’s request was both practical and unique, they needed a way to easily reach high windows to see who was arriving up the drive, as the view from the ground floor was obstructed.
Rather than create a simple set of steps, we turned this into a design opportunity: each step doubles as a drawer, providing extra storage in an often-overlooked space. This kind of multifunctional solution is exactly why custom furniture excels it allows us to merge practicality with aesthetic integrity, without wasting a single inch.
